Description:

State-supported, 2-year, coed. Part of University of Alaska System. Awards certificates, transfer associate, and terminal associate degrees. Founded 1958. Setting: 950-acre small town campus with easy access to Anchorage. Total enrollment: 1,313. Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 14:1. 113 applied, 76% were admitted. Full-time: 371 students, 64% women, 36% men. Part-time: 942 students, 67% women, 33% men. Students come from 51 states and territories, 18 other countries, 5% Native American, 1% Hispanic, 2% black, 1% Asian American or Pacific Islander, 82% 25 or older. Retention: 67% of full-time freshmen returned the following year. Core. Calendar: semesters. Academic remediation for entering students, advanced placement, independent study, distance learning, double major, summer session for credit, part-time degree program, adult/continuing education programs, co-op programs and internships. Community Environment:

Population 47,000, Palmer is a rural town with subarctic climate. A branch of the Alaska Railroad and bus service to Anchorage serve this area. There are churches, a library, museum, hospital, and a health center in the town. Recreational activities include fishing, boating, ice skating and some swimming. There are good shopping facilities available. Palmer has the usual civic organizations found in most U.S. cities. The Alaska State Fair is the fourth weekend of August through Labor Day weekend each year.
