SCAD e-Learning Program
Savannah, Georgia

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) exists to prepare talented students for careers in the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts, and the history of art and architecture. SCAD is a private, coeducational institution with locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, and in Lacoste, France. Online programs are offered through SCAD e-Learning. SCAD e-Learning courses are custom-designed and taught by SCAD faculty members under the authority and accreditation of the Savannah College of Art and Design. SCAD is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; 404-679-4500) to award bachelor's and master's degrees. The Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). A balanced fine arts and liberal arts curriculum has attracted students from every state and from more than eighty countries, making SCAD one of the largest art and design colleges in the United States. Current enrollment is more than 7,300 students.

Distance Learning Program

The Savannah College of Art and Design offers degrees, certificates, and individual courses completely online via SCAD e-Learning. Students have the flexibility to further their education through an online delivery method to suit their locations, schedules, and preferences.

All courses are custom-designed and taught by SCAD faculty members and are offered for academic credit under the authority and accreditation of the Savannah College of Art and Design. SCAD is a member of the Sloan-C consortium of institutions committed to high-quality online education.

SCAD e-Learning programs include a certificate in digital publishing; graduate certificates in digital publishing management, historic preservation, and interactive design; Master of Arts degrees in broadcast design and motion graphics, digital photography, graphic design, historic preservation, illustration design, and interactive design and game development; and a Master of Fine Arts degree in graphic design.

Delivery Media

Courses are delivered via the Internet and are offered year-round; each is organized into 10 units, usually one per week. SCAD e-Learning courses are designed to run on a variety of computers and operating systems and may be accessed with a 56K modem connection or better.

SCAD e-Learning also provides a secure and user-friendly way for faculty members and students to communicate with one another. Throughout the courses, regular online discussions and live chat sessions with professors and peers, as well as assessments and feedback, help students maximize their SCAD e-Learning experience. Students have access to an extensive range of online services and resources and participate in an orientation course.

SCAD is a recognized leader in online course design, instructional technology, and online education. Instructional designers, instructional technologists, media designers, and e-services staff members work with faculty members to ensure that all courses are fully ADA-compliant and adhere to the same high standards as SCAD's on-site course offerings.

Courses adhere to a ten-week quarter with start and end dates, but they are not held at set times. Students are expected to complete course work according to a schedule that stipulates due dates, assessments, and discussions. SCAD e-Learning students are expected to participate in all assignments, examinations, and field trips or other activities. Attendance is determined by active login time and participation.

SCAD e-Learning students must possess basic computer skills and have regular access to appropriate hardware, software, and Internet connectivity. Specific technical requirements may be found on the SCAD e-Learning Web site at http://www.scad.edu/elearning.

Programs of Study

SCAD e-Learning programs include a certificate in digital publishing; graduate certificates in digital publishing management, historic preservation, and interactive design; Master of Arts degrees in broadcast design and motion graphics, digital photography, graphic design, historic preservation, illustration design, and interactive design and game development; and a Master of Fine Arts degree in graphic design.

Broadcast design and motion graphics students learn the skills that enable them to contribute wherever graphic content in motion is broadcast or communicated. The M.A. program combines critical approaches to spatial and material culture, project management, design methodology, research, communication, and design theory.

Digital photography students gain a thorough knowledge of the medium and the photographic applications of digital technology. In the M.A. program, students achieve a mastery of craft, technology, and aesthetics by exploring creative possibilities, developing a personal vision, and studying the history and criticism of the medium.

Programs in graphic design help prepare students for careers in a variety of fields, including publishing, education, advertising, and new media. These SCAD e-Learning programs prepare students to meet the demands of organizations and businesses with increasing in-house publishing needs. Students learn publishing and design fundamentals, including layout, graphic imaging, and typography. They are introduced to a variety of industry-standard computer applications that are used in the production and presentation of print and online media.

Through certificate programs, students learn to produce a broad range of materials, including newsletters, brochures, and Web sites. The undergraduate certificate features an emphasis on production, while the graduate certificate emphasizes management of content, design and development processes, and creative teams. The M.A. degree program is professionally oriented and allows a broad course of study; the M.F.A. includes a field or teaching internship and a thesis component.

The graduate certificate in historic preservation program is designed for individuals working in historic preservation or related fields and those with an interest in historic preservation who would like to expand their knowledge or prepare to enter or enhance their careers. The M.A. program includes courses in building assessment and preservation planning and requires a final project.

The graduate certificate and Master of Arts degree in interactive design and game development help prepare students for careers in interactive art and design, particularly with large design firms, advertising agencies, and product manufacturers, and in education. The method of course delivery is instructive, as students are educated in the electronically mediated environment in which they typically work or plan to work. Students are prepared for, or may enhance their careers in, interactive design, art direction, creative technology, exhibit design, and projection media.

All courses may be credited toward other applicable degree programs upon successful application and acceptance to the program.
