The American Legion Legacy Scholarships (Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To financially support the education of the dependents of active duty United States military and guard and reserve personnel Focus: General studies. Qualif.: Applicant must be the dependent of active duty United States military and guard and reserve personnel who were federalized and killed on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. Criteria: Awards are given based on merit.

Funds Avail.: Varies. To Apply: Applicants must submit a completed scholarship application with a photocopy of the deceased veteran's Certificate of Death (DD 1300). Deadline: April 15.

The American Legion National High School Oratorical Scholarships Contest (Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To support the education of deserving high school students. Focus: General studies. Qualif.: Candidate must be a high school student. Criteria: Students must win the oratorical contest to acquire the scholarship.

Funds Avail.: 1st place: $18,000; 2nd place: $16,000; 3rd place: $14,000. Each Department (State) winner in the first round will receive a $1,500 scholarship. Each first round winner that does not advance to the Final Round will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship. Number Awarded: Varies. To Apply: Applicants may contact their Department (State) or the National Organization of the American Legion for more information about the scholarships.

Remarks: The awards may be used to attend any college or university in the United States.

Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarships (Professional Development/Scholarship)

Purpose: To assist registered nurses (RN) with advanced preparation for positions in supervision, administration or teaching. Focus: Nursing, Pediatric. Qualif.: Applicant must be a registered nurse with a current state license; must have graduated at a regionally accredited school of nursing or will be graduated by the application deadline; must be a registered nurse pursuing nursing education in the field of pediatric lung and respiratory diseases on a part-time or full-time basis; must be accepted by a regionally accredited school of nursing; must be a U.S. citizen; must have leadership qualities; and must have the ability to pursue full-time employment after school. Criteria: Awards are given based on personal and academic qualifications with consideration given to past experience and future employment plans as they relate to pediatric lung and respiratory disease nursing.

Funds Avail.: $3,000 each. To Apply: Applicants must submit a completed scholarship application along with a current state Registered Nurse License or registration; three letters of recommendation; transcript of all college credit attempted; and letter of acceptance from an accredited school of nursing. Deadline: May 15.

Remarks: In cooperation with Eight and Forty.

Samsung American Legion Scholarships (Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To assist the education of a child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. or a legally adopted child of a U.S. wartime veteran. Focus: General studies. Qualif.: Applicant must be a high school junior who participates in either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program and be a direct descendant (child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. or a legally adopted child) of a U.S. wartime veteran who served on active duty during one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion by the United States government. Criteria: Awards are given based on merit.

Funds Avail.: In 2007, ten $20,000 scholarships and 88 $1,000 scholarships were awarded. Number Awarded: Varies. To Apply: Applicants must submit a completed scholarship application along with a photocopy of the veteran's Certification of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214), to Boys/Girls State program.
