Wolveston, Richard de

Wolveston, Richard de (fl. 1170–d. c.1182). English engineer and architect. He designed the remarkable Galilee porch at Durham Cathedral (c.1170) and part of Durham Castle, including the fine west doorway of the Great Hall. As an employee of the Bishop of Durham until c.1182 he must have been one of the ablest professionals of his time. He built the keep of Bowes Castle, Yorks. (1170–4).
