back-to-back housing

back-to-back housing. Housing built in blocks, with the backs of one group of houses touching the backs of the others. They were common in British C19 industrial towns, and must not be confused with terrace housing constructed with walled rear yards and a path between those yards. Most true back-to-back housing has long been demolished, contrary to some cherished beliefs.
