mating system In artificial selection, a procedure that is used to control the genetic constitution of offspring (usually the degree of homozygosity due to inbreeding). Mating may be assortative (i.e. between similar phenotypes), resulting in increased homozygosity; or disassortative (i.e. between unlike phenotypes), tending to maintain or increase heterozygosity.
