laryngismus
laryngismus (la-rin-jiz-mŭs) n. closure of the vocal folds by sudden contraction of the laryngeal muscles, followed by a noisy indrawing of breath. It occurs in young children when a foreign body has lodged in the larynx or in croup; in the past it was associated with low-calcium rickets.
