fibrate (fy-brayt) n. any of a class of drugs that reduce concentrations of triglycerides and possibly of low-density lipoproteins in the blood; they also tend to raise the levels of the beneficial high-density lipoproteins. Fibrates are used for treating hyperlipidaemia. See bezafibrate, ciprofibrate, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil.
