SIDELIGHTS: In a professional career spanning forty-five years, author and basketball coach Lee H. Rose has worked with ballplayers at three significant levels of play. In 1958, he began coaching at Versailles High School; in 1959, he moved to a position at Transylvania University, which led to numerous other college coaching jobs; and in 1968, he joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) as assistant coach of the San Antonio Spurs. In 2003, he retired from the NBA.

Rose's professional accomplishments include leading the University of North Carolina (UNC)at Charlotte to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) finals in 1976 and the NCAA finals in 1977. He also coached Purdue University to the NIT finals in 1979 and to the "Final Four" in 1980. His winning record as a college-level head coach stands at .705 (388-162), with a record of .800 (72-18) at UNC Charlotte.

In The Basketball Handbook: Winning Essentials for Players and Coaches Rose combines a series of anecdotes from his coaching career with detailed instructional material and practical coaching exercises. He offers an expansive assortment of drills and training activities that help players develop fundamental skills in shooting, passing, and rebounding, as well as more advanced abilities such as improving side defense and executing screens. Rose focuses on physical abilities such as strength, agility, speed, and timing. He also outlines a performance-rating system designed to help players and coaches identify players' strengths and weaknesses. A reviewer in Coach and Athletic Director called Rose's unique rating system "a superb evaluation tool." Library Journal contributor James Miller commented that Rose's drills and exercises provide "a wealth of valuable information" for serious players and coaches.
