SIDELIGHTS: Stephen G. Reebs is a professor of biology at the University of Moncton. His research interests are in animal behavior, especially fish behavior. He is author of Fish Behavior in the Aquarium and in the Wild. In this book Reebs discusses various fish behaviors, such as defending their offspring, finding mates, telling time, finding food, and more. He also outlines experiments to observe fish behavior that can be done with fish in an aquarium. Library Journal contributor Margaret Rioux noted, "Although serious and scientific in tone, the book is written in a way that even high school students working on a science project could understand." "Fish Behavior is a fine and well-referenced book; it teaches us to look at our fellow vertebrates with a new respect," commented Richard Shelton in a Times Literary Supplement review.

Reebs told CA: "Writing the book Fish Behavior in the Aquarium and in the Wild was an attempt to get out of the ivory tower and popularize the kind of scientific work that I (and others) do, which is in the field of animal behavior. Though not of practical benefit to society, the kind of research I do on fish behavior is interesting in its own sake and should therefore be communicated to that segment of the public (aquarists, anglers, biology students) with a healthy curiosity about the subject. The project was unsolicited and I was glad to find a publisher receptive to the idea. The book was written during sabbatical leave spent in New Zealand at the University of Otago."
