NEWMAN, Elmer S(imon) 1919-2003

OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born March 19, 1919, in Cleveland, OH; died December 15, 2003, in South Euclid, OH. Librarian and author. Newman was a longtime librarian at the Freiberger Library at Case Western Reserve University. Finishing his undergraduate work at Western Reserve University (now Case Western), he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. After the war, he was employed as an auto parts company manager and building supply company pricing supervisor. However, he did not enjoy this work, so he returned to his alma mater to complete his master's in library science in 1965. After earning his degree, he found a job as an adult services librarian at a Cleveland public library; and then, in 1967, became acquisitions librarian at Cleveland State University. In 1970, Newman joined the Freiberger Library as its librarian, retiring in 1985. He was the author of Lewis Mumford: A Bibliography, 1914-1970 (1971) and compiler of the prose and poetry collection The Best of Our Lives (1975).
