SIDELIGHTS:

Edward Lee is a musician who played in jazz clubs, ballrooms, and other venues before turning his attention to composing in 2000. He is also the author of a number of volumes, including Folksong and Music Hall, a history of folk music "before the American invasion," wrote David Seymour, in a Popular Music essay. Lee traces his subject as it was performed in towns and in the countryside of England into the nineteenth century and comments on how it was changed by the Industrial Revolution, as well as by religion, dancing, and the culture of the working class.

Lee is editor with Graham Vulliamy of Pop, Rock and Ethnic Music in School, a study of ethnic and pop music as it has been taught in the classroom. The first section of the book addresses rock, pop, and Latin American music, including associated instruments. The second section focuses on technique, the guitar, voice, and blues and rock accompaniment. In the third section, Lee and Vulliamy comment on the teaching of such ethnic styles as reggae, drumming, steel bands, and Indian and Balinese music. This volume, as well as Popular Music: A Teacher's Guide, are part of a Routledge series.
