Wittich, Marie

Wittich, Marie, German soprano; b. Giessen, May 27, 1868; d. Dresden, Aug. 4, 1931. She studied with Otto-Ubridz in Würzburg, making her debut as Azucena at the age of 14 in Magdeburg in 1882; she then sang in Düsseldorf, Basel, and Schwerin. In 1889 she became a member of the Dresden Court Opera, remaining on its roster until 1914; while there, she was chosen by Richard Strauss to create the role of Salome in 1905. She also made guest appearances at Covent Garden in London (1905-06) and in Bayreuth (1901-10).
