Williams, Clifton

Williams, Clifton, American bandmaster and composer; b. Traskwood, Ark., March 26,1923; d. South Miami, Fla., Feb. 12,1976. He studied at La. State Univ. (B.M., 1947) and with Rogers and Hanson at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. (M.M., 1948). He played horn with the sym. orchs. of San Antonio and New Orleans; was on the staff of the music dept. at the Univ. of Tex. in Austin (1949-66); then at the Univ. of Miami (1966-76). He composed band music, including the phenomenally popular Sinfonians. His other band pieces include Trail Scenes, Trilogy Suite, Concertino for Percussion and Band, 3 symphonic dances, Fanfare andAllegro, Dedicatory Overture, Dramatic Essay: The Ramparts, The Patriots (commissioned by NORAD), Songs of Heritage, Academic Procession, Castle Gap March,and Strategic Air Command.
