Usmanba§, Ilhan

Usmanba§, Ilhan, Turkish composer and teacher; b. Constantinople, Sept. 28, 1921. He was a student of Cemal Re§it Rey at the Constantinople Cons. (1941-42), and then studied with Hasan Ferit Alnar (piano) and Ulvi Cemal Erkin (composition) at the Ankara State Cons. (1942-48); he subsequently received additional training from Dallapiccola at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood (summer, 1952). From 1948 he taught at the Ankara State Cons. His early works followed the ethnic patterns of Turkish folk songs, but he later adopted serial techniques, with occasional aleatory episodes.
