Stoquerus, Gaspar (real name probably Caspar Stocker)
Stoquerus, Gaspar (real name probably Caspar Stocker), German music theorist who flourished in the second half of the 16th century. He was active in Italy and then in Spain, where he studied with Francisco de Salinas at the Univ. of Salamanca. He wrote De musica verbali (e. 1570; ed. and tr. by A. Rotola as The Two Books on Verbal Music, Lincoln, Nebr., 1988), the only extant Renaissance treatise devoted entirely to text placement in vocal polyphony.
