Smith, John Christopher [ Schmidt, Johann Christoph] (b Anspach, 1712; d Bath, 1795). Ger.-born composer and keyboard player. Went to Eng. as child. In Europe 1745–8. Org., Foundling Hospital Chapel from 1754; played org. and hpd. at Handel oratorio perfs. Wrote 10 operas (incl. The Tempest), oratorio Paradise Lost and others, songs, hpd. suites, and ovs. for Garrick productions at Drury Lane.
