Schierbeck, Poul (Julius Ouscher)

Schierbeck, Poul (Julius Ouscher), distinguished Danish organist, pedagogue, and composer; b. Copenhagen, June 8, 1888; d. there, Feb. 9, 1949. He studied composition with Nielsen and Laub, and also received instruction from Paul Hellmuth, Henrik Knudsen, and Frank van der Stucken. He was organist at Copenhagen’s Skovshoved Church (1916–49) and a teacher of composition and instrumentation at the Royal Danish Cons. of Music (1931–49). In 1947 he was made a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm.

Works

DRAMATIC : Opera : Fête galante (1923–30; Copenhagen, Sept. 1, 1931). ORCH .: Sym. (1916–21; Göteborg, Feb. 15, 1922, Nielsen conducting); Natten (The Night), symphonic scene for Piano and Orch. (1938); Andante doloroso for Strings (1942). VOCAL : Many cantatas; numerous choral works; songs, including the sets Nakjaelen (1921) and Alverden gaar omkring (The World Goes Round; 1938). OTHER : Chamber music; organ chorales.
