Sax, Charles-Joseph

Sax, Charles-Joseph , Belgian instrument maker, father of Adolphe (Antoine-Joseph) Sax ; b. Dinant-sur-Meuse, Feb. 1, 1791; d. Paris, April 26, 1865. He began his career by manufacturing brass and woodwind instruments in Dinant-sur-Meuse, then established an instrument factory at Brussels in 1815, manufacturing not only wind instruments, but also pianos, harps, and guitars; his specialty, however, was brass instruments. He joined his son in Paris, and helped him to launch his revolutionary inventions.
