Rostropovich, Leopold
Rostropovich, Leopold , Russian cellist and teacher, father of Mstislav (Leopoldovich) Rostropovich; b. Voronezh, March 9, 1892; d. Orenburg, July 31, 1942. He studied cello with his father, Vitold Rostropovich. In addition to giving concerts, he served as a prof. at the Azerbaijan Cons. (1925–31). He then lived in Moscow, but after the outbreak of the Nazi-Soviet war in 1941, he moved to Orenburg.
