Rabe, Folke (Alvar Harald Reinhold)

Rabe, Folke (Alvar Harald Reinhold) , Swedish trombonist and composer; b. Stockholm, Oct. 28, 1935. He studied composition with V. Sölderholm, B. Wallner, Blomdahl, and Ligeti at the Stockholm Musikhögskolan (1957–64), where he also received training in trombone and music pedagogy. He began his career as a jazz musician while still a teenager; later was a member of the Culture Quartet (1963–73) and the New Culture Quartet (from 1983), which performed contemporary scores. He was on the staff (1968–80) and served as program director (1977–80) of the Inst. for National Concerts; then was a producer with the Swedish Radio. He experimented with multimedia techniques, producing pieces of “vocal theater” with non-semantic texts.
