Propiac,(Catherine Joseph Ferdinand) Girard de

Propiac,(Catherine Joseph Ferdinand) Girardde , French composer; b. Dijon, 1759; d. Paris, Oct. 31, 1823. After writing several works for the Paris stage, he left France to serve in Condé’s anti-Revolutionary army (1791–99). In 1799 he returned to Paris and was archivist to the Prefecture of State until 1802. Thereafter he devoted himself to belles lettres.

DRAMATIC (all 1st perf. in Paris): Isabelle et Rosalvo, comédie (June 18, 1787); Les deux morts, opéra-comique (June 20, 1787); Les trois déesses rivales, ou Le double jugement de Paris, comédie lyrique (July 28, 1788); La fausse paysanne, ou L’heureuse inconséquence, comédie (March 26, 1789); Les savoyards, ou La continence de Bayard, comédie (May 30, 1789); La double apothéose, opéra-comique (1800); La pension des jeunes garçons, opéra-comique (1801). OTHER: Numerous romances.
