Oury, Antonio James

Oury, Antonio James, English violinist of Italian descent; b. London, 1800; d. Norwich, July 25, 1883. After studying violin at an early age with his father, he took lessons with Mori, Spagnoletti, and Kiesewetter; later studied violin with Baillot, Kreutzer, and Lafont and conducting with Fétis in Paris. He made his London debut at a benefit concert for Kiesewetter’s widow and children (Feb. 20, 1828), and later that year played at a Phil. Soc. concert; also was active as a theater musician. After marrying Anna Caroline Oury (née de Belleville) (1831), he toured widely with her in Europe until 1847. He also was a prof, at London’s Royal Academy of Music.
