O’Sullivan, Denis

O’Sullivan, Denis, American baritone; b. San Francisco, April 25, 1868; d. Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 1, 1908. He was a student of Ugo Talbot and Karl Formes in San Francisco, Vannuccini in Florence, Stanley and Shakespeare in London, and Sbriglia in Paris. Following an engagement at a London concert in 1895, he made his operatic debut as Ferrando in II trovatore with the Carl Rosa Co. in Dublin on Aug. 25, 1895. He was notably successful as the hero in Stanford’s Shamus O’Brien (London, March 2, 1896). From 1897 to 1899 he sang on both sides of the Atlantic.
