Ohms, Elisabeth

Ohms, Elisabeth , Dutch soprano; b. Arnhem, May 17, 1888; d. Marquardstein, Oct. 16, 1974. She studied in Amsterdam, Frankfurt am Main, and Berlin. She made her operatic debut in Mainz in 1921, and in 1922 she joined the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, of which she was a principal member until 1936. She also sang at La Scala in Milan (1927–29), Covent Garden in London (1928–29, 1935), and the Bayreuth Festival (1931). On Jan. 17, 1930, she made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in N.Y. as Brünnhilde, remaining on its roster until 1932. She excelled in Wagner’s operas; among her finest roles were Brünnhilde, Kundry, Venus, and Isolde.
