Nestyev, Izrail (Vladimirovich)

Nestyev, Izrail (Vladimirovich), Russian musicologist; b. Kerch, April 17, 1911. He received training in theory and composition at the Moscow Cons, (graduated, 1937), and then pursued postgraduate studies there with Ferman (1940; degree, 1946). From 1945 to 1948 he was ed. of music broadcasting in the U.S.S.R. He was on the staff of Sovetskaya muzika from 1949 to 1959. He also taught at the Moscow Cons, (from 1956) and was a senior research fellow at the Inst. of the History of the Arts in Moscow (from 1960), which awarded him his Ph.D. in 1971 for his study on Bartók (pubi, in Moscow, 1969). His major work was a biography of Prokofiev (Moscow, 1946; Eng. tr., N.Y., 1946; rev. ed., Moscow, 1957; Eng. tr., Stanford, Calif., 1960, with a foreword by N. Slonimsky; new ed. rev. and aug., Moscow, 1973).
