Munrow, David (John)

Munrow, David (John), gifted English recorder player; b. Birmingham, Aug. 12, 1942; d. (suicide) Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire, May 15, 1976. He studied English at Pembroke Coll., Cambridge; during this period (1961–64), he founded an ensemble for the furtherance of early English music and organized a recorder consort. In 1967 he formed the Early Music Consort of London, with which he gave many successful concerts of medieval and Renaissance music; also was active with his own BBC radio program. He lectured on the history of early music at the Univ. of Leicester (from 1967) and was prof, of recorder at London’s Royal Academy of Music (from 1969). He publ. the vol. Instruments of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (London, 1976). He killed himself for obscure reasons in his early maturity.
