Moskowa, Joseph Napoléon Ney, Prince de la

Moskowa, Joseph Napoléon Ney, Prince de la, French statesman and composer; b. Paris, May 8, 1803; d. St.-Germain-en-Laye, July 25, 1857. He was the eldest son of Michel Ney, Due d’Elchingen and Prince de la Moskowa, and he revealed a talent for music as child. He was made a member of the Chambre de Paris (1831), and later served as brigadier general under Napoleon III. With A. Adam, he organized the Société de Concerts de Musique Vocale, Religieuse et Classique (1843), which presented works of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods at his palace. The soc. pubi. 11 vols, of these works as Recueil des morceaux de musique ancienne. He composed 2 comic operas, Le Cent-Suisse (Paris, June 7, 1840) and Yvonne (Paris, March 16, 1855), as well as some sacred music, including a Mass with Orch. (1831).
