Montgomery, Kenneth (Mervyn)

Montgomery, Kenneth (Mervyn), Irish conductor; b. Belfast, Oct. 28, 1943. He received his formal musical education at the Royal Coll. of Music in London, and then studied conducting in Siena with Celibidache, and in London with Boult; also had instruction with Pritchard and Schmidt- Isserstedt. In 1964 he joined the conducting staff of the Glyndebourne Festival, and in 1966 he conducted at the Sadler’s Wells Opera in London. In 1970 he became asst. conductor of the Western Orch. Soc. at Bournemouth, in 1972, its assoc. conductor, and in 1973 he was appointed music director of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. He was music director of the Glyndebourne Touring Opera (1975–76). From 1976 to 1980 he was principal conductor of the Netherlands Radio. In 1981 he became chief conductor of its Groot Omroep Koor. He was music director of Opera Northern Ireland in Belfast from 1985.
