Mocquereau, Dom André

Mocquereau, Dom André, distinguished French music scholar; b. La Tessoualle, near Cholet, Maine-et-Loire, June 6, 1849; d. Solesmes, Jan. 18, 1930. In 1875 he joined the Order of Benedictines at the Abbey of Solesmes and devoted himself to the study of Gregorian chant under the direction of Dom Pothier. He took his vows (1877) and was ordained a priest (1879). He was made choirmaster (1889), then its prior (1902–08), during which period the order was expelled from France and found refuge on the Isle of Wight (1903). He later returned to Solesmes. He was the founder and ed. of the first 13 vols, of Paléographie Musicale. He publ. Paroissien romain: Liber usualis (Tournai, 1903; 5th ed., 1905) and Le Nombre musical grégorien (2 vols., Tournai, 1908, 1927; Eng. tr., 1932–51).
