McIntyre, (Sir), Donald (Conroy) (b Auckland, NZ, 1934). Eng. bass-baritone of NZ birth. Opera début, Cardiff (WNO) 1959 (Zaccaria in Nabucco). Member SW Opera 1960–7. CG début 1967; Bayreuth début 1967. In 1973 became first British singer to sing Wotan in Bayreuth Ring cycle and sang role in 1976 centenary cycle. Wotan in CG Ring cycle 1974. NY Met début 1975. Sang Prospero in f. Eng. p. of Berio's Un re in ascolto (CG 1989). OBE 1977. CBE 1985. Knighted 1992.
