Lowe, Edward

Lowe, Edward, English organist, composer, and music copyist; b. Salisbury, c. 1610; d. Oxford, July 11, 1682. He was a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral and a pupil of John Holmes. In 1631 he became organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, which post he held until the establishment of the Commonwealth. He then devoted himself to teaching until the Restoration, when he resumed his Oxford post. He also served as co-organist of the Chapel Royal with W. Child and C. Gibbons. Lowe pub. A Short Direction for the Performance of Cathedrall Service(Oxford, 1661; second ed., aug., 1664 as A Review of a Short Direction).He prepared 2 valuable collections of vocal music by leading composers of his time. Among his own works were 10 anthems, 4 part songs, and harpsichord lessons.
