Lebègue, Nicolas-Antoine

Lebègue, Nicolas-Antoine, distinguished French organist, harpsichordist, pedagogue, and com- poser; b. Laon, c. 1631; d. Paris, July 6, 1702. He received training in Laon, and then settled in Paris, where he served as organist at St. Merry (from 1664) and organiste du Roi (from 1678). Lebègue was an outstanding composer of keyboard music. His organ works are of historical interest for his development of the récit en taille and the use of independent pedal parts. N. Du-fourcq ed. his harpsichord music (Monaco, 1956).
