Kovařovic, Karel (b Prague, 1862; d Prague, 1920). Cz. conductor and composer. Harpist at Prague Nat. Th. 1879–85. Cond. some of first concerts of Czech PO 1896–8. Dir. of opera Prague Nat. Th. from 1900. Cond. f.p. of Dvořák's Rusalka, 1901, and operas by Ostrčil, Foerster, and Novák. Cond. f. Prague p. of Janáček's Jenůfa, 1916, having for 12 years rejected it because of a personal grudge, and rev. and reorch. parts of it. Comp. 5 operas between 1883 and 1901, 3 ballets, pf. conc., and 3 str. qts. (1878–94).
