Koenen, Tilly(actually, Mathilde Caroline)
Koenen, Tilly(actually, Mathilde Caroline), Dutch mezzo-soprano; b. Salatiga, Java, Dec. 25, 1873; d. The Hague, Jan. 4, 1941. She studied piano, on which she became a proficient performer, then voice with Cornelia van Zanten. She toured Germany and Austria from 1900 with excellent success; visited the U.S. in 1909-10 and 1915-16. She was particularly impressive in her interpretations of German Romantic songs; also performed some songs by her compatriots.
