Kharitonov, Dimitri

Kharitonov, Dimitri, Russian baritone; b. Kuibyshev, Oct. 18, 1958. He studied at the Rimsky-Korsakov Coll. of Music in Leningrad (from 1976), and received training in voice and piano at the Nezhdanova State Cons, in Odessa (1978–84). In 1984 he became principal baritone at the Odessa State Opera. After appearing at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow (1985–88), he sang Strauss’s Jochanaan at the Edinburgh Festival in 1989. His U.S. debut followed in 1990 when he portrayed Sonora in La Fanciulla del West at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. In 1991 he sang in San Francisco and Los Angeles. He made his first appearance at the Glynde-bourne Festival in 1993 as Prince Yeletsky, and then sang Nabucco in Genoa in 1994.
