Kertész, István (b Budapest, 1929; d drowned while swimming, Kfar Saba, Israel, 1973). Hung.-born conductor (Ger. cit.). On staff Budapest Acad. 1952–7, then cond. at Györ, Hung., 1953–5, Budapest State Opera 1955–7, Augsburg 1958–63. Mus. dir. Cologne Opera 1964–73, where he cond. Ger. première of Verdi's Stiffelio. Prin. cond. LSO, 1965–8 and guest cond. of most leading orchs. Brit. début 1960 (Liverpool); Amer. début 1961; Salzburg Fest. 1961; CG 1965.
