Kerckhoven, Abraham van den

Kerckhoven, Abraham van den, Flemish organist and composer; b. probably in Malines, c. 1618; d. Brussels, late Dec. 1701. He settled in Brussels in his youth. In 1633 he became organist at Ste. Cathérine. In 1648 he was named organist in the domestic service of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, Governor of the Low Countries. In 1656 he became a member of the royal chapel, where, from 1659, he held the position of 1st organist. His organ music, comprised of 8 fantasias, 4 fugues, and 2 pairs of preludes and fugues, reveal a gift for improvisation.
