Johnson, Manzie (Isham)
Johnson, Manzie (Isham), jazz drummer; b. Putnam, Conn., Aug. 19, 1906; d. N.Y., April 9, 1971. Johnson was raised in N.Y. from infancy. He studied violin and piano as a child, then specialized on drums. From the mid- 1920s, he worked with various bands, before joining Don Redman from 1931 until early 1937. During the 1930s, Johnson did many studio sessions with Henry Allen, Lil Armstrong, and others. He worked again with Redman in the early 1940s, until he joined the army in 1944. After the war, he more or less retired, although he continued to gig on occasion through his death.
