Johnson, Frank (Francis)
Johnson, Frank (Francis), black bandmaster and composer; b. probably on the island of Martinique, 1792; d. Philadelphia, April 6, 1844. He settled in Philadelphia (c. 1809), where he organized his own band and dance orch. After touring England with his band in 1837, he led promenade concerts with his band throughout the U.S., highlighting his own works. In Philadelphia, his concerts were often graced by the presence of prominent white artists, an unheard-of practice in his era. Selected modern eds. of his works have been publ, by A. LaBrew (Detroit, 1977) and C. Jones and L. Greenwich, II (N.Y., 1983).
