Horst, Anthon van der

Horst, Anthon van der, Dutch organist, conductor, pedagogue, and composer; b. Amsterdam, June 20, 1899; d. Hilversum, March 7, 1965. He studied with de Pauw (piano; Prix d’Excellence for Organ, 1919) and Zweers (composition) at the Amsterdam Cons. He was organist of Amsterdam’s Grande Eglise Wallonne (1915–18) and English Reformed Church (1918–41), Hil-versum’s Netherland’s Protestant League (1944–55), and Naarden’s Grote Kerk (1955–64). Horst taught at the Amsterdam Muzieklyceum (1922–27) and Cons. (1935–65). He conducted various choral groups and was conductor of the Netherlands Bach Soc. of Amsterdam from 1931. In some of his organ and piano pieces, he adopted Pijper’s scales, which he called “modus con-junctus.”
