Hoof, Jef van, Belgian composer; b. Antwerp, May 8, 1886; d. there, April 24, 1959. He studied composition at the Antwerp Cons, with Gilson, Mortelmas, and Huybrechts. He composed 3 operas: Tycho-Brahe (1911), Meivuur (1916), and Jonker Lichthart (1928). Other works included 5 syms. (1938, 1941, 1945, 1951, 1956), choruses, lieder, and piano pieces. His style of composition was neo-Romantic, with a penchant for expansive sonorities.
