Holmes, Edward, English music critic; b. London, 1797; d. there, Aug. 28, 1859. He studied music with Vincent Novello. In 1826 he became a contributor to a literary journal, Atlas. He also wrote for Fraser’s Magazine and the Spectator (from 1830) and for the Musical Times (1845-49; 1850-59). He publ. A Ramble among the Musicians of Germany (1828; reprint, ed. by C. Cud worth, N.Y., 1969) and The Life of Mozart (1845; 2nd ed., rev., 1878, by E. Prout; 3rd ed., rev., 1912, by E. Newman).
