Handford, Maurice

Handford, Maurice, English conductor; b. Salisbury, April 29, 1929; d. Warminster, Dec. 16, 1986. He studied horn at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was principal horn in the Halle Orch. in Manchester (1949–61). In 1960 he made his conducting debut with it, and then served as its asst. (1964–66) and assoc. (1966–71) conductor. In 1961 he became conductor of the Royal Academy of Music First Orch. He also was conductor with the City of Birmingham Sym. Orch. (1970–74) and music director of the Calgary (Alberta) Phil. (1971–75).
