Frankenstein, Alfred (Victor) (b Chicago, 1906; d S. Francisco, 1981). Amer. critic of music and art. Educated Chicago Univ., where he was on staff 1932–4. Clarinettist in Chicago Civic Orch. before becoming writer. Mus. critic San Francisco Chronicle 1934–75. Found and pubd. (1939) sketches by V. Hartmann which inspired Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and ed. illustrated edn. of score (1951).
