Darclée, Hariclea (real name, Haricly Hartulary)

Darclée, Hariclea (real name, Haricly Hartulary) , Romanian soprano; b. Braila, June 10, 1860; d. Bucharest, Jan. 10, 1939. She studied in Bucha rest and Paris; made her debut as Marguerite at the Paris Opéra in 1888; then sang at La Scala in Milan, creating La Wally on Jan. 20, 1892; also sang in Rome, N.Y., St. Petersburg, Moscow, and in South America before retiring in 1918. She was particularly distinguished for her Italian repertoire; she created the role of Tosca (Rome, Jan. 14, 1900); also was known for her performances of roles in Wagner’s operas.
