Campanari, Leandro, Italian violinist and conductor, brother of Giuseppe Campanari ; b. Rovigo, Oct. 20, 1857; d. San Francisco, April 22, 1939. He studied in Padua, and also attended the Milan Cons., graduating in 1877. After a tour of Europe, he went to the U.S. in 1881 and settled in Boston, where he organized the Campanari String Quartet. He became a proficient conductor and was in charge of the Grand Orch. Concerts at La Scala in Milan from 1897 till 1905. In Feb. 1907 he was engaged to complete the season of the Philadelphia Orch. after the sudden illness of the regular conductor, Fritz Scheel. However, Campanari failed to impress the orch. or the audience, and was not reengaged.
