Calabro, Louis

Calabro, Louis, American composer, conductor, and teacher; b. N.Y., Nov. 1, 1926; d. Bennington, Vt, Oct. 21, 1991. He studied with Persichetti at the Juilliard School of Music in N.Y. (graduated, 1952; postgraduate diploma, 1953). From 1955 he taught at Bennington (Vt.) Coll. He also was founder-conductor of the Sage City Sym. in North Bennington from 1971. He received Guggenheim fellowships in 1954 and 1959, NEA fellowships in 1973 and 1976, and the Vt. Governor’s Award for the Arts in 1991. His autobiography, Cosmos: A Life (1986), remains unpublished.
