Bucht, Gunnar

Bucht, Gunnar, , Swedish composer, musicologist, and pedagogue; b. Stocksund, Aug. 5, 1927. He studied composition with Blomdahl (1947–51) and also took courses in musicology at the Univ. of Uppsala (Ph.D., 1953). He later pursued training in composition with Orff in Germany (1954), Petrassi in Italy (1954–55), and Deutsch in Paris (1961–62). He taught at the Univ. of Stockholm (1965–69), and then was in the diplomatic service as cultural attaché at the Swedish Embassy in Bonn (1970–73). From 1975 to 1985 he was a prof, of composition at the Stockholm Musikhôgskolan, serving as its director from 1987 to 1993. From 1963 to 1969 he was chairman of the Soc. of Swedish Composers. In 1964 he was elected to membership in the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm. His music retains traditional forms while adopting diverse modern techniques.
