Bononcini, Giovanni Maria

Bononcini, Giovanni Maria, Italian composer, father of Giovanni and Antonio Maria Bononcini; b. Montecorone, Sept. 23, 1642; d. Modena, Nov. 18, 1678. In 1671 he was awarded a ducal appointment as violinist at the Cathedral of Modena. He also served as chamber musician to the Dowager Duchess Laura d’Este. He had 8 children, of whom the only 2 who survived infancy were Giovanni and Antonio Maria Bononcini. He publ. 11 sets of instrumental works: I primi frutti del giardino musicale (Venice, 1666); Varii fiori (Bologna, 1669); Arie, correnti, sarabande, gighe e allemande (Bologna, 1671); Sonate (Venice, 1672); Ariette, correnti, gighe, allemande e sarabande (Bologna, 1673); Trattenimenti musicali (Bologna, 1675); Arie e correnti (Bologna, 1678); also the vocal works Cantate da cámara for Solo Voice and 2 Violins (Bologna, 1677) and Madrigali for 5 Voices (Bologna, 1678). He further publ, a didactic manual, Musico prattico (Bologna, 1673; Ger. tr., Stuttgart, 1701).
